Sasikaran Thanapalasingam has acknowledged he the man seen on video chasing down and killing his estranged wife Tharshika Jeganathan, but has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

As she walked from the bus stop on Ellesmere Road to her Scarborough basement apartment on the evening of Sept. 11, 2019, Jeganathan and Karunsa Parameswaran chatted about mundane things. A dress Parameswaran wanted to borrow. What they ate. And whether Jeganathan, 27, had heard back from her divorce lawyer yet.“I’m calling out to her, ‘Tharshi, what happened?’” Parameswaran testified in a downtown Toronto courtroom on Wednesday, taking a long pause to collect herself.

Thanapalasingam has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. He has conceded that he is the man seen in the video and that he “attacked and caused the death” of Jeganathan. The trial is expected to focus on intent.According to an agreed statement of facts read out in court by prosecutor Caolan Moore, Jeganathan and Thanapalasingam had an arranged marriage in India on Nov. 1, 2015. She moved to Toronto on Feb. 23, 2017 and moved in with Thanapalasingam and his parents.

While he was holding her head down, she alleged he’d asked her: “Do you know who I am? Do you know what I am capable of?” In 2018, Jeganathan reported to police that Thanapalasingam had been at the Tim Hortons near the Dollarama she worked at. The police spoke to Mr. Thanapalasingam and cautioned him to stay away from this area and no charges were laid, according to the agreed facts.
