The hub was shuttered in 2020 when COVID-19 restricted the use of public spaces, and never reopened.
It was closed on the cloudy afternoon two weeks ago when 18-year-old Jefferson Peter Shardeley Guerrier was killed outside nearby Woburn C.I. in front of at least a dozen other youth.
While the nearly two dozen other hubs across the city reopened following lockdowns, The SPOT has remained closed since early 2020, according to two library workers who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly. “We are currently planning to redesign the space to make it welcoming and safe for all age groups to use the equipment, services and spaces,” the email said, something Critchley added had a timeline of up two years.
After school, teens could often be seen filing into the space en masse and heading for their preferred activity — grabbing a snack, getting started on their assignments for the day or decompressing with friends while playing games or listening to music.
