Steven Nelson, 37, was executed for the murder of Pastor Clint Dobson during a robbery at the NorthPointe Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas. Nelson maintained his innocence throughout the legal process, claiming he was merely a lookout and unaware of the pastor's murder.

A man was executed by lethal injection in the US state of Texas on Wednesday for the 2011 murder of a pastor, a crime he vehemently denied committing. Steven Nelson, 37, spent over a decade on death row for the murder of Clint Dobson, 28, during a robbery at the NorthPointe Baptist Church in Arlington, near Dallas. Dobson was beaten and suffocated with a plastic bag. Judy Elliott, the church secretary, was also severely beaten but survived.

Nelson's appeals against his conviction and death sentence were repeatedly dismissed by Texas courts. The US Supreme Court declined to hear his case, paving the way for his execution. He was executed and pronounced dead at 6:50 pm local time (0050 GMT on Thursday), state official Amanda Hernandez confirmed in a statement.
