The camp of suspended Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. on Monday asked the Department of Justice to dismiss the murder complaint filed against him over the killing of Gov. Roel Degamo. | santostinaINQ /PDI

It noted that during one of the preliminary investigation hearings, the 10 suspects recanted and disowned their earlier extrajudicial statements.

“The common grounds that these 10 suspects invoke for their recantations are that their earlier extrajudicial statements did not reflect the truth as they were predrafted for, or extracted from, them by NBI agents involuntarily or forcibly through coercion, threats, intimidation and torture,” it added.

The suspended lawmaker’s camp also claimed that the accusations against him have been “rendered worthless” following the suspects’ recantation. “We do not have to take every recantation as gospel truth because of their previous statements. So, it does not change anything, if at all, because recantations, as always said, are looked upon with disdain by the courts and even by the prosecution,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla told a press briefing on Monday.
