Here are three things that have got me screaming into the void more often than normal this week

This is AI generated summarization, which may have errors. For context, always refer to the full article.April moving into May has been rather crazy. Aside from the regular bits of world news putting a damper on everything — from the various wars, to the troubles with the United States and how its president is treating everyone, to the prices of commodities — it’s no wonder I’m irritable.

I don’t quite know why people are giving their data up for money, but it’s concerning because — based on that post’s pictures — it’s Sam Altman’s Worldcoin trying to get people to sign up for or buy into it. You know… the OpenAI-ChatGPT-Sam Altman fellow?in February points to this rollout being the case. The blogpost noted, “World ID Orb verifications are available in select cities in the province of Bulacan, just outside Manila, as it prepares for nationwide availability.

His technology, among others in the industry, let people create bots that seemingly act and talk like a human online. Now, he’s also part of a company — a for-profit company — looking to identify between bot and human. And they only need your biometric data. Has Worldcoin committed anything bad yet? Other than affixing a rather miniscule amount to our bodily data? Nothing that would seem to violate current laws, but in this case, I’m really hoping for more transparency and scrutiny in where the scanned data is going, what’s going to happen to it, how it’s being protected, and what remedies people can have if their data is taken by someone stealing World.org or Worldcoin data.

The skinny? Researchers at the University of Zurich went into the Change My View subreddit — a forum in which people are inclined to ask questions and comment to try to change people’s minds about a particular contentious topic — and used AI bots to pose as human commenters and get users to change their minds on posts made in the subreddit without the knowledge or consent of the users there.
