An alliance of digital experts and advocates told the government that a mere technical remedy on the registration of SIM cards, like reviewing and revising its law, would not address the prevalence of cybercrimes.
The Junk Sim Registration Network said SIM registration creates databases that could be targets for cyberattacks, instead of its purpose against text-related crimes. According to the Philippine National Police, the number of cybercrimes increased by 21.8 percent in the first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.
