Sure, this was aided by the government not getting the rub of the green, as evidenced by a higher than anticipated inflation rate that significantly increased the prospect of just the second election campaign interest rate rise in history. Penny Wong stepped up and Katy Gallagher showed herself to be a safe and capable pair of hands. Ed Husic, Kristina Keneally, Chris Bowen and, when allowed, Tanya Plibersek all pitched in.The downside is that Albanese, who often resembles a hybrid of his predecessors – the snarly Simon Crean and the prolix Kim Beazley – was shown up by younger, fresher and more articulate colleagues.
