FOLLOWING a blast fishing that ruined a rehabilitated reef in Cebu City, a multi-city task force was formed to address illegal fishing in the Mactan Channel. The task force will include officials from the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu and Talisay, Cordova, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources , and other national agencies. Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia announced the group’s creation on Monday, March 10, 2025.

He also instructed the City Budget Office to allocate funds for additional equipment for the Bantay Dagat Commission.Preparing affidavits Ed Karlon Rama, chairman of the Bantay Dagat Commission, confirmed that authorities are preparing affidavits with witness statements and coordinating with Bfar to file charges against the perpetrators. Fishermen involved could face legal action for illegal fishing and illegal possession of explosives.
