Tandang Sora, the first Filipina to appear on Philippine currency, is being celebrated with the opening of a museum dedicated to her in Quezon City.

Josefa Llanes Escoda, known as ' Tandang Sora ,' is the first Filipina to have her image featured on Philippine currency. According to a report by Kuya Kim Atienza on GMA News “24 Oras” last Friday, the image of Tandang Sora was first seen on the 100 peso bill of the English series released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. The use of this currency, which bore the face of Tandang Sora , dubbed as the Mother of the Revolution, lasted from 1951 to 1966.

Subsequently, the image of Tandang Sora was also featured on the five-centavo coin. Aside from putting her image on the money as recognition of her heroism, a major street in Quezon City and a barangay are also named after Tandang Sora. According to Kuya Kim, there is also a street named after Tandang Sora in San Francisco, California. Every January 6th, her birthday is celebrated, and it is inevitable that some would wonder how old Tandang Sora would be if she were alive today? Based on the study of scholar Dr. Jim Richardson, Kuya Kim said that Tandang Sora's true birthday is January 6, 1836, making her 189 years old today. Simultaneously, a museum dedicated to Tandang Sora was opened in Quezon City, where you can see some of her belongings. “The museum is named Tandang Sora Women’s Museum because we look up to Tandang Sora. It was inspired by her virtues, her care, helpfulness, helpfulness, and above all, her courage,” said curator and artist Sandra Torrijos. “She’s historican. The concept starts with the babaylan, the women of the past, who had equality before the Spaniards arrived. From there, we went around to women who fought in the revolution, until the contemporary women’s movement,” she added. As of now, the museum has only had a soft opening, and the hard opening will be held on February 19, which is also Tandang Sora’s death anniversary.-- FRJ, GMA Integrated New
