THE world has made enormous progress in reducing the impact of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) over the last 15 years. Globally, 30.7 million people — 77 percent of those living with HIV — were on treatment in 2023, compared to just 7.7 million in 2010.

This has resulted in a dramatic decline in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome -related deaths, down 51 percent over the same period.
The 2022 Integrated Hematological and Behavioral Surveillance Survey reveals that only less than half of key populations possess comprehensive knowledge about HIV transmission and prevention. Among these groups, only 36 percent of MSM, 39 percent of transgender women, 24 percent of female sex workers and 18 percent of PWID demonstrate comprehensive understanding.
