In an exclusive interview with Sky News Australia, one of Taiwan's most senior officials has warned that Beijing is planning for the day when it will have the 'full capacity' to launch a cross-strait attack.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News Australia, Joseph Wu voiced deep concern over Beijing’s intensifying pressure campaign on the self-ruled territory, which it has vowed to “unify” using force if necessary.

“If you look at the recent Chinese military exercises across the Taiwan Strait in the first part of April, they seem to be rather intense.”“They seem to be practising their war guidebook again,” he said. “If he’s not able to tell the Chinese people that he has established this legacy for the history of China, he might want to do something as a surprise so can tell them that he has accomplished something.Beijing’s international diplomacy is also raising concerns across the Taiwan Strait.

However Taiwan’s top diplomat believes China is actively forming a coalition of nations willing to support its aggressive aims. “It’s right at the doorstep of Australia and that is something I know the Australian Government has been waking up to,” he said.“If it were not for the comments from the Micronesian President - his public statement to stop negotiations with the Chinese Government and other Pacific countries - there'll be eight to 10 other Pacific countries signing similar security agreements to the one made with the Solomon Islands.

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister rejects the idea of an indefinite arms race with the much larger and more capable China.“I think we need to invest in smart strategy, we need to invest in asymmetric strategy and at the same time, we need to increase self-defence determination.“I don’t know how much we’re going to put into defence because there seems to be no end to this, if China continues to build-up against Taiwan.

French President Emmanuel Macron caused consternation in Europe and Asia when he suggested such military support wouldn’t be guaranteed during a recent visit to Beijing.
