The Syrian Arab Republic has designated the Philippine Red Cross as its official donation collection site for the victims of the recent 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck near the Turkish and Syrian borders.According to a National Public Radio report, the earthquake hit southeastern Türkiye and northern Syria on Feb. 20, two weeks after a deadly 7.8-magnitude quake devastated the two counties leaving over 44,000 people dead.
“The Syrian Embassy has asked local charitable foundations, NGOs, companies, and organizations to direct donations to PRC’s National Headquarters at the Philippine Red Cross Logistics and Multipurpose Center along Apo Street in Mandaluyong City,” PRC said on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Syrian government appealed for in-kind donations such as medicines, winter blankets, clothing, and tents.
“As the devastation continues with yet another big earthquake, we send our thoughts and support to those affected. PRC is in communication with the Honorable Consulate General of the Syrian Arab Republic and we will be opening our doors to be collection sites for donations to help our Syrian brothers and sisters who are in dire need of help,” said PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Gordon.
Turkish Ambassador to the Philippines Niyazi Eyren Akyol also assigned PRC as the collection point for those who want to extend help to the quake-hit countries.Last Feb. 18, PRC shipped 228 winter tents to Türkiye in addition to the P15.4 million donation from the organization and the House of Representatives.
