A man implicated in the death of a US woman inside a suicide capsule in Switzerland was released from custody. The case led to legal and ethical questions about the use of the Sarco pod, which is designed for assisted suicide.
A man held since September over the death of a US woman inside a controversial suicide capsule in Switzerland was released from custody Monday. The woman, aged 64, took her life on September 23 within the Sarco capsule located at a woodland retreat. This led to multiple arrests, with five individuals being quickly released, leaving one suspect in custody. The Last Resort, an assisted dying organization, stated that the remaining suspect was Florian Willet, the organization’s co-president.
The public prosecutor's office initially pursued criminal proceedings for incitement and aiding suicide, with suspicions of intentional homicide. However, after the latest investigation, charges of intentional homicide were dropped, leading to the suspect's release. The Last Resort had introduced the Sarco pod in July, presenting it as a means for assisted suicide
