A shooting at an adult education center in Örebro, Sweden, has left 10 people and the suspected gunman dead, marking the deadliest mass shooting in the country's history.
Sweden grappled with the aftermath of its deadliest mass shooting on Wednesday, as the nation mourned the loss of 10 individuals, including the suspected gunman, who perished in a shooting at an adult education center in the central city of Örebro . Several media outlets reported that the suspected gunman took his own life, although police have yet to confirm these accounts.
Authorities stated that eleven people lost their lives in the Tuesday massacre at Campus Risbergska, a high school for young adults. Six individuals were receiving treatment at Örebro's university hospital, with five undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds and listed in “stable but serious” condition. A sixth person was being treated for minor injuries, according to Örebro County authorities, who confirmed that all the wounded were over 18 years old. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson addressed the nation on Tuesday evening, declaring it “the worst mass shooting in Swedish history.” He acknowledged that many “questions were still unanswered” but assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the events leading up to the tragedy, the possible motives, and how such an incident could have occurred. Kristersson urged against speculation, emphasizing the need for patience and a reliance on factual information as the investigation progressed. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, but police have stated that all indications point towards the perpetrator acting alone, without any ideological motivation. They have not released any information regarding the identity or ages of those killed, nor whether they were students or teachers at the school. While school attacks are relatively uncommon in Sweden, the country has unfortunately experienced shootings and bombings linked to gang violence, resulting in dozens of deaths annually. Örebro police chief Roberto Eid Forest assured the public that the perpetrator was not known to law enforcement, had no gang affiliations, and that there was no indication of further attacks.Swedish television channel TV4 reported that police had conducted a search of the suspect's residence in Örebro late on Tuesday afternoon. The channel reported that the suspect was approximately 35 years old, possessed a valid firearm license, and had no previous criminal record. However, they did not disclose any further details about his identity. According to newspaper Aftonbladet, citing family members, the suspect lived a solitary life, was unemployed, and had distanced himself from his family and friends. The shooting occurred around midday on Tuesday. A 16-year-old girl named Linn, who attends a school near the site of the massacre, described the scene to an AFP correspondent: “I was standing there, watching what was happening, and I was just around here when I saw some bodies lying on the ground. I don't know if they were dead or injured. There was blood everywhere, people were panicking and crying, parents were worried... it was chaos.” Liv Demir, 36, whose son attends a school near Campus Risbergska, expressed her shock and disbelief: “I became numb, speechless. I didn't really know where to go.” Her son also participated in gym classes at Campus Risbergska. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden released a statement on Tuesday expressing his sadness and dismay upon receiving news of the shooting. The Royal Court announced on Wednesday that flags would be flown at half-mast at all royal palaces throughout the day. The government also announced a similar measure for its own offices and parliament. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the shooting as “truly horrifying,” stating, “Such violence and terror have no place in our societies — least of all in schools. In this dark hour, we stand with the people of Sweden.
