House Deputy Majority Leader Lorenz Defensor believes the Supreme Court will not interfere with Congress' impeachment process against Vice President Sara Duterte, despite a petition filed by the Vice President seeking to halt the trial. Defensor argues that impeachment is a political question and the SC will exercise judicial restraint. The House impeached Duterte by an overwhelming vote, and there is public pressure for the Senate to begin the trial immediately.
The Supreme Court is unlikely to interfere with Congress in the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte , according to House Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo Rep. Lorenz Defensor.
“I have yet to read the petition. But as a rule, impeachment is a political question and the Supreme Court will exercise judicial restraint. It will not interfere with the impeachment process,” said Defensor, a lawyer and member of the 11-man House prosecution team. There is growing public clamor for senators to convene themselves into an impeachment court as soon as possible for Vice President Duterte’s trial, though Senate President Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero said the trial could start after the incoming 20th Congress convenes in July.
