Labor MP Tanya Plibersek has dodged a grilling from a Sunrise host over the huge compensation payment awarded to former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins.
The former Liberal staffer was given a secret compensation payment of up to $3 million after she claimed she was “medically unfit” for work and would lose 40 years’ worth of wages following the fallout from her high-profile trial against colleague Bruce Lehrmann.
Barr started by asking Ms Plibersek whether she believed Mr Lehrmann should be entitled to compensation, after the former staffer claimed during his interview on 7News spotlight that he may never work again. The Sunrise host then asked whether Ms Higgins’ payment should be referred to the newly established National Anti-Corruption Commission, which Ms Plibersek rebuffed.
Ms Higgins’ former employer, Linda Reynolds, has suggested on several occasions she may raise the compensation payment with the anti-corruption commission.Mr Joyce then said his piece, discussing the need for compensation for Australian war veterans rather than people “in Parliament House”.
