The Albanese government’s plans for major reform of Australian elections could severely cut into the teal independents’ massive pool of money.
Activist and entrepreneur Simon Holmes a Court and his political financing group Climate 200 bankrolled more than 20 candidates in the 2022 federal election.
Trade Minister and Special Minister of State Don Farrell, who will lead the reform process, said wealth should not be the defining factor in Australian elections. The parliamentary inquiry released its interim report in June in which the committee focused on donation disclosure limits and caps. While no specific amounts have been flagged, Senator Farrell said he believed the government would have support across the parliament to pass the reforms.
The reforms put the teal independents – and the four existing MPs who received money from Climate 200 – in a precarious position as integrity was one of the major pillars of their campaigns.Donation caps could prevent a single donor from providing a vast majority of candidate’s war chest, while expenditure limits would level the playing field even further.
