Students need to relearn how to read

ALMOST 19 million Filipinos who graduated from high school between 2019 and 2024 are categorized as 'functionally illiterate,' based on their poor reading comprehension, according to a recent study by the Philippine Statistics Authority . The results of the study were highlighted by Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian during a hearing last Wednesday of the Senate Basic Education Committee, which he chairs.

' 'Because most information is delivered through text, reading and comprehension are vital abilities for kids to survive and comprehend how society operates,' the paper noted. Reading is an essential tool in shaping a student's understanding of ideas and words. Without it, a student will get lost in a complex world of cognitive and linguistic processes.
