Stricter Anti-Hazing Law necessary

The Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 was enacted in the aftermath of the hazing death of University of Santo Tomas College of Law student Horacio Castillo III in a bid to prevent a similar fatal initiation rite from happening again. MBOpinions READ:

Five years after, however, hazing deaths still pervade — the latest victim of which was John Matthew Salilig, a chemical engineering student of the Adamson University.

To prevent a repeat of fatal hazing, Tolentino said there is a pressing need to fine-tune Republic Act 11053 or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018. Dela Rosa, a former chief of the Philippine National Police, believes lapses in the implementation and observance of the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 are the reasons fraternity hazing still exists until today despite having it amended a number of times since it was enacted in 1995.
