.stephenharper: The Crown at the end of the second Elizabethan age via nationalpost

There is little I can add to the countless tributes and testimonies to the Queen’s remarkable life. Despite having had no expectation of being monarch until the age of 10, she dedicated a full seven decades to her duties throughout her Realms and the Commonwealth. She put aside all other personal dreams and ambitions to serve this greater institutional purpose from her earliest adulthood to only hours before her passing.

This leads me to comment on the British monarchy — the power of which I had witnessed once before. It was 10 years ago, when I was present in London during the Queen’s diamond jubilee. Through a week of ceremonies, I was particularly struck by events at a concert, that included many of the greats of the British music industry, outside Buckingham Palace. Before Prince Charles concluded the evening with a tribute to the Queen, a film was shown following her life.

I am a great admirer of the constitution of the United States, but I do believe that there are ways in which parliamentary government is superior. One of those is the separation of the positions of head of state and head of government. The prime minister of the day may wield enormous power, but he or she does not embody the state. The formal head of the country itself is someone whose role is to rise above political programs, partisan divisions, and passing times.

One can, of course, easily object to the theoretical foundations of monarchy, even in Britain itself — inherited privilege, ancient but unclear origins, removed today from a withering aristocracy, and isolated in an age so very different from when it was created. Yet, it performs its functions in a way that a presidency can barely dream of.
