Starbucks is implementing a new code of conduct that requires customers to make a purchase to remain inside its stores. The policy change aims to address concerns about disruptive behavior and prioritize paying customers.
Starbucks is reversing its policy of welcoming all individuals into its stores, regardless of purchase history. Starting Monday, a new code of conduct will be implemented in all company-owned North American locations, requiring customers to make a purchase to remain inside. The policy change aims to prioritize paying customers and address concerns regarding disruptive behavior .
The code of conduct also prohibits discrimination or harassment, consumption of outside alcohol, smoking, vaping, drug use, and panhandling. Violators will be asked to leave, and the store may contact law enforcement if necessary. Starbucks employees will receive training on enforcing the new policy. This move marks a reversal from a 2018 open-door policy implemented following the arrest of two Black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks for not making a purchase. The incident sparked widespread criticism and led to Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz's pledge to make everyone feel welcome. However, employees and customers have since reported increasing instances of unruly and even dangerous behavior in stores, including drug use and other disruptive activities. In 2022, Starbucks closed 16 stores nationwide due to safety concerns. The new policy is part of an effort by Starbucks' CEO, Brian Niccol, to revitalize the chain's struggling sales and restore its community coffeehouse atmosphere
