Stakeholders are hoping that the Senate will tackle two bills designed to prevent online content piracy.
The measures that seek to revise the 26-year-old Intellectual Property Code are Senate Bill 2385 filed by Senator Ramon 'Bong' Revilla and Senate Bill 2150 filed by Senator Jose 'Jinggoy' Estrada.Both bills aim to enable the Philippines' Intellectual Property Office to take down access to internet sites that violate copyrights and launch site blockages.The two measures are pending at the Senate Committee on Trade and Industry headed by Senator Mark Villar.
Jose 'Joey' Salceda and combined into House Bill 7600, was passed on third and final reading in May 2023.In a brief conversation with The Manila Times, screenwriter Jerry Gracio expressed hope that the Senate will speed up the legislative process on the two bills.'The passage of the bills is important to protect our artists, or even our content creators. The bills should have been passed a long time ago,' Gracio said.
