Security services will cost the city $61, 872 annually

People skate on The Loop at Bannerman Park in December. Washrooms at the park, and at Bowring Park, have been locked up early in the evenings due to vandalism, but the city decided on Monday, Feb. 13 to hire evening security in order to keep the washrooms open later. -Keith Gosse/The Telegram file photoST. JOHN'S, N.L. — St. John’s city council decided on Monday, Feb. 13, to provide security at Bannerman Park and Bowring Park in the evenings so the washrooms can remain open later in the day.

Repair costs became significant, so parks staff started closing the washrooms at the end of the workday around 5 p.m. Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary said it will be money well spent because there’s an increase in people using the parks, while at the same time there’s a squeeze on the availability of public washrooms in the city.

Coun. Ian Froude said it’s important for people who are homeless and don’t have easy access to a washroom. He said the security will also save the city money that it would otherwise spend on repairs due to vandalism.
