The building will replace the municipality’s current three-storey building located at 136 Hammond St., which does not meet National Building Code requirements, nor accessibility standards. The main section of that building is over 100 years old. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Employment Services Development Canada will be tenants in the new administrative center.
Blaise Theriault, communications advisor for Communications Nova Scotia, said the location for the new Registry of Motor Vehicles office will be announced at a later date. “I can confirm that the Shelburne RMV will remain in Shelburne. The hours will remain Tuesday – Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.,” he said.
The municipality awarded the $6,160,000 tender for the construction of the new administrative building to Rikjak Construction, Lunenburg, on Sept. 13, 2021. The tender was the lowest of three received. The total budgeted cost for the building – including engineering, design, furniture and fixings – is $7.3 million.
