ILOILO CITY—Secretary Francisco Duque III of the Department of Health (DOH) is calling for a specific scientific study before lifting the ban of the controversial Dengvaxia vaccine amidst a national emergency due to dengue.
Secretary Francisco Duque III of the Department of Health explains why the ban on controversial Dengvaxia vaccine has not yet been lifted during a press conference in Iloilo City.
Duque emphasized that no specific tests can prove 100 percent that a person had dengue as laboratory tests can cross-react with other mosquito-borne diseases such as Chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis or Zika virus. The Dengvaxia ban was put in place with deaths of children that were linked to the massive anti-dengue vaccination program during Garin’s tenure as health secretary in 2016.
