CHINESE and Filipino diplomats this week completed the ninth meeting of the China-Philippines Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea, the unwieldy name for talks first launched in 2017 under then-president Rodrigo Duterte.
The talks, ostensibly to promote the peaceful management of conflicts in the South China Sea and to strengthen friendly relations between the Philippines and China, took the bilateral approach favored by Beijing through the establishment of the Bilateral Consultative Mechanism .The meeting in Manila earlier this month was the ninth for the group, with little more concrete than the agreement that both sides wanted to see a peaceful resolution of their disputes.
'The two sides 'believe that maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea serves the interests of both China and the Philippines, and is also the common goal of countries in the region,' the MoFA said. While this last statement is indisputable, there is wide disagreement on both sides on how to achieve this. All Lazaro had to say was that it went off without incident — quite the accomplishment in these tense days.
