Researchers are on the cusp of creating a vaccine to fend off bacterial ear infections in children.

Middle ear infections are common among infants and young childrenThe jabs will target one of the main types of germs that cause infections, called non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae.

"It can also be associated with hearing loss and that has really long-term impacts on their learning and social skills.""The approach that we use to kill the bacteria doesn't cause damage to the shapes on the outside of the bacteria," she said. Clinical trials are underway for a new pneumococcal vaccine the university has also helped to develop."We'd like to test if we can combine these two vaccines to really target the two most common causes of ear infections," she said.

"We hope that if a vaccine is effective against these bacteria, we could target people that have COPD and prevent that from happening," Dr Brazel said.South Australian mother Marlee Telfer, whose two-year-old daughter Anabelle has had 14 ear infections this year, said news of a potential vaccine comes as a relief."She hasn't got great communication skills so a lot of the time it's guessing if there's something wrong, if she's in pain.
