The Spanish renewable energy giant that is building Australia’s biggest wind farm says bad behaviour within the sector is putting community support for future projects at risk, and has warned that federal government targets will be jeopardised unless it better manages the energy transition.
The 180-turbine MacIntyre project in Queensland, which will generate enough power for 700,000 homes and will be the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, is expected to be operational next year. Mateo said the renewable sector was learning valuable lessons from Europe’s over-reliance on Russian gas, and while steps had been taken to shift away from a heavy reliance on China for sourcing components for wind and solar panels, the move would be expensive and take more than a decade. He said commercial customers were now a bigger driver of investment and growth than governments, with long-term power purchasing agreements now sufficient to build a huge wind farm to serve either.
Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen has urged all those involved in designing, building and installing high-voltage cables across the country to improve engagement with local communities, amid a backlash in several regions, including western Victoria, northern NSW and Queensland.Mateo said he was not concerned with speculation about delays in materials to build more solar panels and wind turbines, saying history showed that increased demand for raw materials had always produced more.
