Filipino basketball star Kai Sotto begins his ACL injury recovery with the help of his strength and conditioning coach, Mel Lantin. Sotto will miss several crucial tournaments, including the FIBA Asia Cup and the qualifiers, but his coach remains hopeful for a return to the court in time for the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
Randy Caluag's strength and conditioning coach, Mel Lantin , has arrived in Japan to help the Filipino basketball prodigy recover from his ACL injury. Lantin shared in a social media post, 'Back as an OFW! Let's go! Stand up, walk, run, strengthen, and return to play,' emphasizing the vital stages of Sotto's rehabilitation. The 7-foot-3 center sustained the injury during the Koshigaya Alphas' B.League game against the Seahorses Mikawa, collapsing to his knees in agony.
Consequently, the Alphas have placed him on the injury list, effectively ending his season. This setback also means Sotto will miss the FIBA Asia Cup in August. Sotto is anticipated to be sidelined for nine months to a year, making him unavailable for the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers in February and likely the main tournament in Saudi Arabia. Despite this, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone expressed optimism that Sotto will recover in time for the FIBA World Cup qualifiers. Cone believes that once Sotto completes his rehabilitation, he will be ready to rejoin the national team. Sotto has demonstrated remarkable growth and dominance on the court since working with Lantin. This injury unfortunately halted his upward trajectory
