CAN soil as a natural resource ever turn extinct? Yes, it can. If one removes its organic content in the form of plant litter and animal waste, it turns into sand. This is called desertification. Conversely, if one adds organic content to sand, it becomes soil.
Soil extinction happens because of, among others, unsustainable agricultural practices like pumping chemicals into the natural resource. The result is depletion of the nutrient value of soil-derived agricultural products like vegetables. Further consequences extend to impending famine, forced migration, civil wars over food security and considerably weakened health of future generations.
Also indispensable is increased public awareness of the issues surrounding effective soils management so that communities and individuals can act sustainably, and public participation in decision-making can be meaningful to prevent and resolve soil misuse. The current preoccupation of countries of the world with natural disaster risk reduction brought to the fore the urgent need for healthy soils vis-à-vis climate protection.
