— Lawmakers are pushing for the inclusion of social media literacy in school curriculum as more young Filipinos engage in the use of social media platforms.Magdalo Party list Rep. Manuel Cabochan authored one of the measures -- House Bill 5924, or the Social Media Awareness Education Act.

“Because of the huge amount of information being fed in social media, it has become a minefield of misinformation, whether deliberate or not. In the recent years, there has been a spread of fake news,” he said during a joint committee meeting of the Basic Education and Culture and the Higher Education and Technical Education committees on Thursday.

He noted that media literacy is defined as the “ability to access, evaluate, analyze, create, and act using all forms of communication… is anything from interpreting emojis to understanding underlying messages in online advertisements to producing viral video content and recognizing native advertising.”
