Small, good steps at the DepEd
LAST week, this space took the Department of Education to task for the very much delayed implementation of the Anti-Bullying Act of 2003.Today, we want to laud them for taking small steps in the right direction. Admittedly, it is one of the most difficult departments to manage. But under its new secretary, Sonny Angara, the department has managed to score milestones and institute measures in a short time.
It has also forced some teachers to teach subjects like mathematics and reading, even if they are unfamiliar with it. This is a dire situation that further burdens both the teachers and students. The DepEd has also signed a memorandum of agreement with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines to provide free legal assistance to public school teachers and non-teaching staff nationwide.
