SYDNEY — Retailers who sell snowblowers and snowmobiles aren’t digging how the weather has treated them so far this winter. “This season is off by 10-15 ...

David Mackley, president and sales and service manager with Mackley Equipment Ltd. in Sydney Forks: "This season is off by 10 to 15 per cent, based on historical data and 35 years in the industry from a dealership level." IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — Retailers who sell snowblowers and snowmobiles aren’t digging how the weather has treated them so far this winter.

That means for Mackley’s business, customers are “not purchasing new units at the same pace as in years past,” he said. “And they’re not proceeding with major repairs necessary for the snow equipment to function for this season.” “And the third storm — in a three- to four-week timeline from the initial snow event — creates a frenzy of servicing and or replacing this season versus waiting until the first storm of the following season, unless it is mid-March or later in the season,” he added.

“Unless you get two or three storms in a row, especially around this time of the year, most people will tough it out through the rest of the winter,” said van Nostrand, adding the rainfall played a contributing factor in lower sales. “That’s when people might wait and not buy a snowblower until next season.”

“It was actually good in November and the start of December, when it got cold,” Hawkins said of the retailer’s snowmobile sales. “But once that rain started in January, things just never improved for the whole month. The same slump applies to snowblower sales, he said, but also store inventory has been limited due to supply chain issues.
