"I wish she could've seen me now, a perfect 4.0 composition student at Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts. She's responsible for getting me there." Doolan played piano at any fundraising event she was asked to and for more than a decade organized the annual Rotary Club Christmas fundraiser. The oldest of eight children, Doolan would give students extra lessons — sometimes at no extra cost. If there was a student who wanted to play piano but whose family couldn't pay, Doolan wouldn't chase them down for outstanding fees.
Awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the former University College of Cape Breton in 2001, Doolan was awarded the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award in 2007. "Back then, in the it was kind of a big thing to be travelling around in the car like that," he recalled fondly. However, music was her true passion and when Doolan came home to Sydney after graduating from university she told her father she was going to be a piano teacher and there was no changing her mind.
