There are fears an office building in Sydney’s south may collapse after a large sinkhole opened up right next to it. An exclusion zone was set up as workers were evacuated from the building on West Botany St at Rockdale about 6.30am on Friday.
Sinkhole threatens Sydney building. The two-storey commercial office building became “destabilised and is showing signs of structural collapse”, Fire and Rescue NSW said. “This will be a protracted incident, with operations to continue throughout the day.” 7NEWS understands a 10m-wide sinkhole has opened up right next to the building. Specialist rescue teams have been sent to the scene to assist,
Acting Superintendent Mat Sigmund said. “The building appears to be suffering some type of collapse,” he said. “There’s some subsidence on site which is affecting the underpinnings of the building.” The signs of the structural collapse cover an area of about 20m, where subsidence occurred, Sigmund added. “There were 10 people at a very remote location in the building and our firefighters have removed those persons from the building,” he said. No one else is believed to be at risk.
say workers will not be allowed to return to the tunnel construction site until it has been declared safe. Engineers have also been called in to examine the building’s structural integrity. All surrounding roads remain open.
