IN the heyday of European imperialism, European powers waged the First and Second Opium Wars between 1839 and 1860, forcing China to allow opium into the country. That addicted millions of Chinese and enriched Britain, France and, since 1844, the United States.
Today, Beijing has banned another scourge preying on millions of Chinese: online gaming. But other countries, including ours, have allowed or even enticed internet firms conducting such activities to operate in our lands and profit from China beyond the reach of its law enforcers.When the current controversy on Philippine online gaming operators erupted, the Chinese Embassy declared:'Chinese law prohibits all forms of gambling.
There was also concern that POGOs operate near some bases opened for US use under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement . Three of those nine sites are near Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro and Puerto Princesa, where countless foreign ventures are set up, and Pampanga is also a favored international business hub. Should those cities now vet investors according to EDCA parameters? Also, the great majority of online gaming firms are in Metro Manila, where there is no EDCA base.
