"Health care is expensive. We’re spending a significant amount on health care, and we will continue to spend more and more on health care. The federal government’s recognition of the burden of the costs on the provinces is an important thing. And they’ve done that to some degree today with the proposal to the provinces.

“At the working meeting with premiers, the federal government announced it will increase health funding to provinces and territories by $196.1 billion over 10 years, including $46.2 billion in new funding.” There are also individual agreements with the province to help with specific issues and scenarios — the so-called strings are in the bilateral agreements. And Premier Houston says it seems fair, even though he stopped short of saying it was enough to fix all that’s broken with health care in Nova Scotia, especially in this budget year.Ottawa’s new deal could mean 5 per cent more for health care in P.E.I.
