MANILA, Philippines — Strong Group needed a major scoring surge in regulation play, before outscoring Taiwan-A in extension period to score a nail biting 83-79 win en route to ruling the 43rd William Jones Cup with an eight-game sweep on Sunday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
The Philippine-based squad scored nine straight points inside the last two minutes of regulation period, capped by Kiefer Ravena's three-point shot from the corner to grab a 73-71 lead. But Taiwan-A 's naturalized player Brandon Gilbeck scored on a putback off a loose ball play, which sent the game into overtime.Strong Group managed to show composure in the extra five sessions despite losing imports Chris McCullough and Tajuan Agee to fouls.
The last time the country reigned supreme was in 2019 under the Mighty Sports squad, which incidentally, was also coached by Charles Tiu.McCullough struggled on offense after finishing with a frigid 4-of-16 from the field for just 12 points, 10 points below his tournament average. But Agee picked up the scoring slack after leading the team with 21 points and nine boards, before fouling out.
