Three years ago, Vancouver launched its Climate Emergency Action Plan, which charts a path to reducing our carbon pollution by 50 per cent by 2030 in a just and equitable way. At the time, my family and I were living on Haida Gwaii, and I was happy to see my hometown tackling this global crisis. We have all the solutions we need to curb our emissions and still avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

We’ve made some progress in these areas. The city has passed strong building-emissions policies, increased public infrastructure for electric vehicles, and made walking and cycling more appealing with sidewalk upgrades and by expanding the School Active Travel program.Article content Of course, the impacts of climate change don’t hit evenly: Lower-income and socially marginalized communities are the most vulnerable. In Vancouver, as in many cities, marginalized people and communities deal with substandard housing, increased pollution and less access to things like green spaces or air conditioning during heat waves.
