The fresh warning for the east coast comes after a storm cell on Thursday unleashed intense rainfall and triggered life-threatening flash flooding between the Shoalhaven and the NSW Central Coast.

Scattered showers are likely to develop from late morning across the east coast and ranges, with the thunderstorm risk higher in the Harbour City's far west from the early afternoon. It comes after a severe storm outbreak on Thursday across the NSW coastline which unleashed intense rainfall, triggering life-threatening flash flooding between the Shoalhaven and the Central Coast.

Water rushed across Sydney’s roadways, coinciding with the school pick-up for many as the heavy rain overwhelmed drainage systems. The huge rainfall rates were courtesy of a perfect combination of storm ingredients: The winds above the ground that steer thunderstorms were very light, meaning there was nothing to push those storms away from where they formed, meaning that the heavy rain fell over single location without relief for extended periods.

Despite the clear skies on Friday bringing some promise, those out and about would have felt the muggy warmth this morning; relative humidity over Sydney harbour hovered in the high 90s until 9am.
