As 'severe' thunderstorms continue to lash parts of New South Wales, a trail of carnage has been left behind with cars, houses and roads submerged in flood waters across the state.

NSW SES Southern Zone Deputy Commander Sharon Fox said conditions were still"very hazardous" across the Illawarra and south coast, with a number of schools closing and school bus trips cancelled due to the weather.

Emergency crews have conducted a large number of flood rescues from cars and buildings, and provided sandbagging assistance to a childcare.
