GANDER, Nfld. — Before the puck dropped here Thursday night, Ottawa Senators coach D.J. Smith insisted the next to last pre\u002Dseason game wasn’t about winning,…
“This is a much better game than we played the other night,” Smith said, referring to Tuesday’s 5-4 win over the Canadiens in Montreal. “Just as a whole. I thought we were a little bit sloppy early, but we got better as we went against a team that can make some plays off the rush.”
The penalty killing situation will be interesting to watch. While the Senators power play has certainly shown signs of being potent, questions remains about exactly how the penalty killing units will shake down. Former first over the boards penalty killing forwards Connor Brown and Nick Paul have moved on to Washington and Tampa, respectively, and Alex Formenton remains unsigned. The penalty killing defencemen appear to be up in the air, too.
“The next couple of weeks here you’re going to see the real power plays in the league and that will separate who are the guys that go over the boards first.” Mildly concerned about a lack of production from the club’s top two lines earlier in the pre-season, Smith was hoping for a spark by flip-flopping centres Stutzle and Josh Norris.
