GANDER, NL — Amid a new lively pre\u002Dseason environment, Ottawa Senators coach D.J. Smith tinkered with a new look Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens.
“It’s an opportunity for us to see something without the expense of a regular season game,” Smith said following a spirited morning practice here. “And we’ll see how this goes.”“I don’t think five on five, either line has been great . It’s exhibition, but at the same point, we want to see what we have. Sometimes, people fit with other people. I know what Norris, Tkachuk and Batherson can do .
Of course, the line movement wasn’t the only part of the day that offered a change of pace in the first of two Kraft Hockeyville games this week. The town of 12,000 was well represented, but so, too, was Twillingate, the community of 2,200 that officially won the Hockeyville sweepstakes back in 2020, giving them the funds to renovate their own unique, but aging George Hawkins Arena.
“It makes it a lot better,” he said. “We skate so often during the season, but having all the fans and everything makes it fun. “You can feel the welcoming feeling that the community has and how everybody knows everybody. It’s an honour to be here, to be honest, and give this community an opportunity to hopefully watch some of their idols on their favourite team.”
