After successfully showcasing himself in numerous roles while attending training camp on a professional tryout offer, the 35-year-old Brassard will be on the Ottawa Senators opening day roster, officially signing a one-year, $750,000 deal. It’s an intriguing position for a player who has served primarily as an offensive star for most of his career. Brassard could rotate in and out of the lineup as a fourth line centre or winger — Dylan Gambrell and Mark Kastelic remain on the roster — meaning he’ll be a healthy scratch on many nights. At the same time, he still has enough offensive touch that he could step in to play on a top line in the case of injuries or if Smith is looking to shake things up.
