It was only fitting that Derick Brassard was asked to wear black, red and white jerseys and even took some spins on defence at various points during Monday\u0027s practice at Canadian Tire Centre.
“This has been great, the last three weeks,” said Brassard, the Gatineau native who has played in 951 regular season and 118 playoff games with 10 teams during the course of a career that began when he was selected sixth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2006. “Meeting all the new young guys and all the energy they bring on the ice, I’m pretty excited for the start of the season.
It’s an intriguing position for a player who has served primarily as an offensive star for most of his career. Brassard could rotate in and out of the lineup as a fourth line centre or winger — Dylan Gambrell and Mark Kastelic remain on the roster — meaning he’ll be a healthy scratch on many nights. At the same time, he still has enough offensive touch that he could step in to play on a top line in the case of injuries or if Smith is looking to shake things up.
When practice ended Monday, Smith told the players that Brassard had officially signed a contract and tapped him to lead the stretches in the middle of the ice.Article content
