Following the return of Mary Jane Veloso, Filipino senators urge the government to prioritize the well-being of detained OFWs abroad.

Several senators on Wednesday urged the government to closely monitor and provide assistance to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) currently detained abroad following the return of Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines . Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero stated that the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and all embassies and consulates abroad have the primary responsibility of making OFWs 'feel the long arm of government to protect and shield them whenever they need help.

' Escudero called for the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to create an inventory of Filipinos incarcerated in foreign countries, details on their cases, and potential assistance for their release and for making their detention more bearable. He also suggested exploring a 'prisoner swap' treaty allowing convicted Filipinos to serve their sentences in their home country. Senate foreign relations committee chairperson Imee Marcos echoed the need for a treaty facilitating the transfer of Filipinos serving sentences in other countries. She emphasized the importance of allowing them to serve their sentences in the Philippines, where the focus is on rehabilitation and second chances for those who have made mistakes
