SENATE President Pro Tempore Lorna Regina 'Loren' Legarda sought the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 1870 that aims to revitalize the salt industry to make it competitive in local and international markets.

The senator, in a statement on Thursday, said she hopes that SB 1870 will lead to the creation of more jobs for salt farmers. She noted that the possibilities of the salt industry for the Philippines' overall economic performance 'are endless.''The future of the salt industry lies in our hands. We should all consider this a shared aspiration and commitment to act tirelessly to save what's left of the industry,' she said.

'We will all benefit from this sector's potential for our nation's inclusive growth,' Legarda said as she lamented that the country's salt industry is 'on the brink of extinction.'She said the country imports about 550,000 metric tons of salt, equivalent to 93 percent of the nation's requirement. The Philippine Association of Salt Industry Networks said these numbers are expected to increase in the coming years because of the rapidly growing population.
