(UPDATE) SEN. Bong Go on Wednesday affirmed his full support for the government’s implementation of zero-balance billing in public hospitals, urging health authorities to ensure the policy is fully and fairly enforced.

SEN. Bong Go on Wednesday affirmed his full support for the government’s implementation of zero-balance billing in public hospitals, urging health authorities to ensure the policy is fully and fairly enforced.Speaking during Thursday’s hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, which he chairs, Go cited the 11.8-percent increase in household out-of-pocket health expenses in 2024, based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Herbosa clarified that zero-balance billing applies strictly to patients in basic ward accommodations in DOH-run hospitals. These wards, typically shared rooms, account for around 90 percent of beds in DOH facilities, while patients choosing private or single rooms are expected to shoulder additional costs.Go, however, said that despite the policy, many patients still seek financial assistance from his office and other government agencies.
