MANILA, Philippines — Saying that the Senate should not be used as a tool to pursue personal vendettas, Senate President Francis Escudero on Thursday rebuked “politically motivated forces attempting to weaponize the impeachment process.”
“The Senate is not a playground for political actors seeking revenge or power. We are a constitutional body tasked with upholding justice — not bending the law to fit anyone’s agenda,” Escudero said hours after the chamber voted to archive the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.The Senate chief was one of 19 senators who voted to archive the impeachment complaint in deference to the Supreme Court’s ruling invalidating the Articles of Impeachment.
“For the rule of law to prevail, the High Court must act as a compass, and not as a political cheerleader impartially applying the law by calling out violations not swayed by public opinion or political allegiance,” he added.He slammed those who refused to accept the court’s decision.“It is plain arrogance, or if at all, a power play,” he said“Cherry-picking court rulings destroys the judiciary’s purpose.
