The chairman of the Senate Peace and Order Committee expressed disgust at the discovery that several of the suspects tagged in recent spate of kidnappings of foreigners in an apparent human-trafficking operation were actually designated “protective agents” licensed to provide security to POGO executives, among others.
In the latest reported case, authorities on Wednesday rescued 43 Chinese nationals, one of them a kidnap victim, during operations by the Philippine National Police-Anti-Kidnapping Group in Angeles City, Pampanga. A suspect identified as Chen Yi Bien alias Ayi, 33, Human Resource Manager of Lucky South 99, an apparent POGO outfit, was arrested during the operation.
“Incidental to the rescue of the kidnapped foreigner, 42 other Chinese nationals similarly enslaved under human trafficking conditions in a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operation establishment were likewise rescued by operatives of the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group [PNP-AKG],” Abalos added. Citing information reaching her office, the senator said the victims were exploited and forced to work by the alleged syndicates. “That’s why it is a big challenge to our police force, as this requires coordination,” Poe said in Filipino, while also asking immigration authorities to thoroughly screen foreign nationals entering the country. “Because if these incidents happen here, I’m sure it can happen to Filipinos, our countrymen, abroad. So we should investigate these,” she said.
